media not shown in mobile app

  1. Dear all,
I am running a local installation of Wordpress (V 5.8) in a Docker container on a raspberry pi 4 in my local network. I just set everything up, there are no plugins or other themes installed. As a database I use an instance of MariaDB. Everything works as expected on the server side. The installation is accessible via port 80. I can use all the functions via the backend and the uploaded media are also displayed correctly with thumbnails.

The installation is accessible via port 80. I can use all the functions via the backend and the uploaded media are also displayed correctly with thumbnails.

However, in the IOS Worpress app (both on iphone and ipad, both with current OS 14.7.1 and app version 17.9) the media (currently only images) are not accessible. Icons for the individual images are displayed, but no thumbnail. If you want to open an image by clicking on the tile, the error message "An error occurred while loading the media content" appears (translated from German, the wording in the app in English may differ).

Is this a known problem or is it related to my individual setup? Does the app perhaps need other ports apart from port 80? Apart from the fact that wordpress and the database are running as a docker stack, there is no firewall or similar installed.

I would be very grateful for any ideas on how to solve this.

    Kind regards
    Kai

  2. Local setups like this can be tricky. I think your question is interesting! But I do not know the answer to solve it I'm afraid.

What I can do is try to ask some clarifying questions that might help others troubleshoot with you.

Am I understanding correctly if I'm hearing that you have a locally setup site in a docker container and it's working in the iOS app to access content but not images?

When you saw the problem where the media are not accessible when using the iOS app, what screen were you on exactly? Was this when using the block editor to create a post or the in-app browser to look at the site or were you checking that from somewhere else in the app?

I see that you mentioned you can use all the functions via the backend—do you mean you can use all the functions in a browser on the iOS device via wp-admin but you cannot access the same functions (i.e. media) using the app?

Hopefully answers to these things could give some extra help to someone trying to narrow down potential causes for the problem. 🤞

  3. Did you find an answer? I have the exact same issue

Local docker setup everything works great except I can't see media in the ios app. Says There was a problem loading the media item.

If you hold the image for a preview it says

    Media preview failed. ImageDownloaderError 0.

  4. For me this happens only in the Posts views and the media library of the app. Any web preview, the website, all that works great.

Also, if the picture came from THAT iOS device, the preview will sometimes be available in the media gallery of the app (but never in the posts section)

  5. Dear all,
sorry for not answering this long. I did not find an answer yet.

Am I understanding correctly if I'm hearing that you have a locally setup site in a docker container and it's working in the iOS app to access content but not images?

Yes, exactly. It is working perfectly except the access to the media library.

When you saw the problem where the media are not accessible when using the iOS app, what screen were you on exactly? Was this when using the block editor to create a post or the in-app browser to look at the site or were you checking that from somewhere else in the app?

THe problem accurs when I am in the "Medien" "Media" part of the app. The problem also accurs when I access the Media galery while writing a blog post.

I see that you mentioned you can use all the functions via the backend—do you mean you can use all the functions in a browser on the iOS device via wp-admin but you cannot access the same functions (i.e. media) using the app?

    Yes.

I can only access pictures in the media galery from my iphone that have been uploaded to the galery from my iphone. If I upload pictures from my laptop using a browser, I only see a placeholder and not the image in the galery. I also get the error "Beim Laden des Medienelements ist ein Fehler aufgetreten". Which seems to be the same error message like "Media preview failed. ImageDownloaderError 0."
Using a pc/mac and a browser, I can see all media in the media galery.

    Best regards
    Kai
