I can't approve or reply to comments on my self-hosted Jetpack-enabled blog!

  1. I used to blog on WordPress.com and everything was fine with this app, except for a minor comment-related crashing bug that I encountered when I upgraded to iOS 8 (but the developers fixed that already).

    I switched to a self-hosted Jetpack-enabled WordPress.org blog just recently, though, and ever since I could neither approve nor reply to comments made on my blog, but I could still make comments on blogs I follow. My blog title has an apostrophe, too, but it appears as (') instead of ('). Is there any way I could fix this? I really hope the developers attend to this problem! It's really disappointing because I used to be so fond of this app and how useful it was. :(

    I'm wondering if this could be related to the user role setting for your self-hosted site. You might double check by signing into your site's admin, choosing the Users tab, and making sure that your login has either an editor or administrator user role. Let me know if this helps!

    Regarding the straight apostrophe instead of the curly apostrophe, I see the same thing on my test site. I'd call this a bug in the app. We'll look to get it fixed in a future release.

  3. Yes, my login has an administrator role but I still can't approve nor reply to any comments. That's also the only user registered on the blog. So I'm the only one experiencing this? I wonder why. :(

    Anyway, regarding the apostrophe… I didn't mean it to show up that way. I meant the apostrophe is displayed as & # 0 3 9 ; (no spaces) instead of the apostrophe symbol. I hope that gets fixed in an update! :)

  4. I, too, am having problems approving and replying to comments on the iPad WP app. Theoretically, using the app would save me time. I tried it today. I wrote the reply, and I got an error. I have never had success with approving snd replying to comments in the app.

  5. @erikadjesus, @realinginlife, Quick question for you both, are either of you using the Jetpack plugin and, if so, are is the Jetpack Comments feature enabled? You can check by going to your sites wp-admin, and checking Jetpack > Settings

    Also, are you able to approve and reply to comments from the admin or is not working there as well?

    @erikadjesus, ah! Gotcha. That is definitely something we'll get fixed.

  6. Yes, I'm using Jetpack and it displays no connection errors when I go to the debug page. The comments feature is also enabled. I can approve and reply to comments from my WordPress admin page with no problem at all.

    A couple of questions:

    Is there any particular error message that you see or do replies/approvals seem to just silently fail?
    Is this happening from the Notifications tab, or from the Me tab?

    It looks like there might be an issue where a comment you just approved will momentarily look unapproved, but then show up as approved after a short delay. This would happen under the Notifications tab and we've seen it happen with a self-hosted site with Jetpack installed that we tested with. Does this sound like what's happening?

    We'll keep looking into the problem. However, version 4.6 of the app should be available very soon (any day now!) Can you let us know if it still occurs once you get the update?

  8. This happens from the "Notifications" tab. The comments appear approved for a second or two, then the "Approved" button goes back to "Approve" again. When I try replying to approve a comment, a message box pops up saying "there has been an unexpected error while sending your reply."

    On the "Me" tab, hitting approve would trigger a message that says "Error: The comment could not be moderated." but it ends up showing on the page, anyway. I can also send a reply prior and after approval from there, but replying to a comment before hitting approve would not automatically approve the comment—it would just display the reply on the post. It would send a notification to the person replied to, though.

    I also noticed that the built-in autocorrect on iOS is disabled when typing through the "Notifications" tab, but it works on the "Me" tab. What gives? :(

    Anyway, can't wait for the new release! I hope all these problems get fixed. I really miss the fully functional WordPress mobile app!

    @erikadjesus Wow! Thanks for that detailed explanation. That was awesome!

    I was able to reproduce the issue's approving and replying to comments. Its looking like the issue with replying is a bug in the app that we'll need to fix. I'm afraid it won't be fixed in version 4.6 since that version has already been sent to Apple. The problem approving comments looks like it might be something broken on our servers. We're still trying to track down the exact cause but I'm hoping its something we'll be able to fix behind the scenes and, once we do, will just start working again for you.

    Right! That feature was accidentally left turned off on the Notifications tab. (Oops, our bad!) We turned it back on but I'm not sure if that change made it to version 4.6, or if it will be in 4.7.

    You're welcome. I really enjoyed using the app and it would be such a shame if I can't utilize it anymore just because I switched to a self-hosted blog.

    Hi there! I just wanted to follow up and say that Apple has (finally!) approved version 4.6 and it should be available from the App Store shortly. Hopefully autocorrect will work for you after the update.

    We're still testing version 4.7. Because of the holidays it probably won't be available until sometime during the firts week of January. I'll follow up again then. :)

    I just downloaded 4.6 and unfortunately, autocorrect is still disabled in the notifications screen. I still can't send replies from there, too. :(

    Yeah, sorry about that. :( We'd already sent that version to Apple before we discovered that particular bug. It should be fixed in version 4.7.

  16. Just updated the Wordpress App and I can't reply to comments anymore either. I was able to reply with previous version, but this version keeps giving me the error "there has been an unexpected error while sending your reply". Is this the same bug mentioned above or should I start a new thread?

  17. So, just to add to this (let me know if I should start a new thread). With the most recent App update I can no longer reply to any comments (at all) under the "me" tab. I get the same "unexpected error" fail message every time I try. It doesn't matter if it's a pre-approved comment or not. No replies possible.

    However, I AM able to reply to all comments under the "notifications" tab. They send and show up after I refresh the screen. So, at least for now I have a workaround. It would be nice to get the "me" comments working again.

    I am on a self-hosted blog and have been using the Wordpress iOS App for over a year.

  18. @wheelingit Thanks for letting us know. We've decided to not wait for version 4.7 to fix this and are going to submit a hot-fix to Apple ASAP. If we're lucky, and Apple expedites the review and approval process, then version 4.6.1 will available in a couple of days.

    And that's odd, re: @wheelingit's problem. It's the other way around in my case, because I can reply and approve comments on the "Me" tab (buggy, but it works) but not on the "Notifications" tab. I hope both of those issues get fixed!

    Now *that* is interesting, I think I missed that detail. Just curious, are you signed into any other sites/accounts in the app other than erikadejesus.com and your wpcom account for Jetpack? The Me > Comments feature and comments under Notifications use different mechanisms when replying, editing, etc. I'm wondering if maybe the Notifications feature is getting confused about which account credentials it should be using.

    More info in case you need it...I can't edit comments in the "Me" section either. I can only approve..no reply or edit. Notifications is working fine. Stats are working fine.

    Hope @erikadjesus is able to get her problem fixed too. Sounds like the opposite of mine.

  23. I have the same problem with approving comments.

    I also have @wheelingit's problem of not being able to reply to comments.

    In the "me" tab I get an error message "There has been an unexpected error while sending your reply."

    In the "notifications" tab I get exactly the same error message.

  24. I don't have JetPack installed-
    I have most current versions of both the iOS app and WordPress self hosted.
    Get the "There has been an unexpected error while sending your reply" with the options "Give up" and "Try Again" every time I try to reply to a comment.

    Not very happy.

  25. I have the same problem. Worked fine on desktop and mobile site but I cant respond from the app.

    Wordpress 4.1

    IOS 8.1.2

    wordpress app 4.6

    I get the same message:
    There has been an unexpected error while sending your reply

  26. Hi Aksello, in the interest of combining all the same issues to one thread, I'm adding in the content of your other thread here, and then closing that other thread. You wrote:
