Error when sharing to Wordpress app

  1. Let me start by saying how annoying it is having to create a new account only to be able to report an issue. Usually I would immediately close the webpage and try to ignore the issue altogether, causing a suboptimal experience. But in this case the issue prevents me from using the iOS app in a meaningful way, so here I am.

Whenever I try to share some text with the iOS share popover to the Wordpress app, I get a standard error dialog titled "Sharing of the error" (translated from Italian), which should probably be the other way round, "Error while sharing" or similar. The description says that 1) I should start the Wordpress app and 2) login to wordpress.com and 3) make sure that I have at least one site. I don't have number 2. Is this really necessary? I was able to log in with my own server with Wordpress installed on it, why should I need a wordpress.com account to post to my own server? Thanks in advance for any help.

  2. Hi there!

Thanks for reaching out. Please keep in mind that you can reach our support team directly through the app without needing to create a new account here.

To do so, navigate to My Sites and click on the Profile icon in the top corner and navigate to Help & Support. This will open a conversation specifically with us.

The share option will only work if you have a site connected to WordPress.com as it uses that connection to be able to communicate the post to your site. If you have a self-hosted site using WordPress.org, you can install the Jetpack plugin and connect it to a WordPress.com account to be able to share posts to your site this way.

Let me know if you have any questions about this. I'm happy to clarify further if necessary. :)

  3. Thanks for your help. I didn’t notice that there is an in-app Help menu, I’m used to following the Support link on the App Store page. Perhaps you may want to add a way of contacting you from the website without needing to create an account.

Is there a technical limitation that prevents the share option from connecting to my own site, rather than Wordpress.com? After all, I can create and edit posts from within the app just fine. From a user’s perspective is seems very strange.

  4. Hi there!

The support contact form available in the Mobile app does not require you to create an account. You can also email us at mobile-support@automattic.com

Regarding the sharing options, this is a Jetpack/WordPress.com feature. WordPress.com and WordPress.org (self-hosted sites) are a bit different in terms of structure and what they offer.

You can, however, enjoy these features by connecting your self-host site with a WordPress.com account via Jetpack.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

  5. Yes, that was already pointed out to me in the previous post. What I suggested is to add an option on the website which doesn't require a login (such as listing the email you gave me), so that users who don't know about the in-app option will still be able to submit a bug report.

I don't have JetPack since I don't need all those other features. I was just confused that publishing to my own site is not possible with the share extension. Is it impossible to support this without having JetPack? That is quite confusing.

  6. Thank you for the suggestion. I will pass that along to our team.

Regarding the sharing issue, at the moment, yes, it's impossible to have this feature without Jetpack. If you don't need all the other Jetpack features, you can install the plugin but keep all the modules disabled, except for the Sharing module which is the one you need to be able to share your posts. But without Jetpack it cannot be done.

  7. I first installed a JetPack plugin from the Plugins page, then visited the Statistics page (all in the app) and there was a button named “Install JetPack”, so I tried to install it again, but when clicking on the Configure button that appears after the installation, an empty page opens which has only a Back button and the title “Configure JetPack”. I would attach a screenshot but there seems no way of doing so with this form.

  8. Hi there!

Can you try installing the plugin from a browser first? Log in to your site's wp-admin dashboard and go to Plugins > Add New. From here search for the Jetpack plugin, install and activate. You'll follow the prompts to connect it to a WordPress.com account and then log in through the app following the same login account.

If you're still having trouble after doing so, can you reach out to us via the app directly so we can look into your account details? Please open a request by going to My Site > Profile Icon > Help & Support > Contact support. Our team will be better able to assist you this way.

    Thank you!

  9. I don’t know what you mean with “WordPress.com account”. Do I need to have a subscription of some sort, or do I just need to register? Also, does “WordPress.org site” means that I cannot link a site hosted anywhere?
