Can't log in to self hosted site (iPhone + iPad)

  1. The topic title says it all. It stopped working from one day to another a while back. Haven't been bothered to figure out a solution until now where it would be really useful.

    My website is: http://www.KasperKay.dk

The error message says that it can't find a Wordpress website on the URL.

And if the following can help. I don't know.

  2. Have you tried temporarily disabling plugins and switching to a default theme to see if one is causing a conflict? Please give it a try. If the app starts working you can re-enable plugins one at a time until you find the one causing trouble.

  3. Thanks for the quick reply, Eric! I'll give it a try later and return with an update.

  4. Okay, so I tried disabling every plugin and switching to a default theme - nothing helped. However, regarding the XML-thing (I am really not a technical genius), there seems to be a problem:

This page contains the following errors:

error on line 3 at column 6: XML declaration allowed only at the start of the document

Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.

Could this be the thing causing the problem? If so; what is the fix?

  5. I did a simple test against http://www.kasperkay.dk/xmlrpc.php, the page on your site that the apps talk to in order to share information. The test was a basic XML-RPC request that asks your site to list the methods it supports: "system.listMethods".

I got back the following error:

Failed to Parse XML Document Reason: XML document structures must start and end with the same entity. Line 90 column 17.

This tells me there is something misconfigured either with your blog, or with your host that needs to be addressed before your site will work with the app.

A lot of times this is something that can be tracked down to a problem with a plugin. However, if you've already checked that the conflict is not caused by a plugin or theme, I suggest contacting your web host for assistance.

  6. Same problem, same results. When doing the test on my desktop, the following came up in my browser:

    WordPress http://wordpress.org/ http://blog.tonybear.com

  7. I am having similar issues. I had previously connected 2 other blogs successfully and things were working fine. I ran into the "Sorry, we can't log you in. Unable to find a WordPress site at that URL" error when trying to add a third blog. I am using admin credentials, password is correct, tried several iterations of the url (with and without http://) and no luck.

I then decided to uninstall and reinstall the app and now I'm getting the same error message on all 3 blogs! I can't connect to any of them through the app!

Yes, I've tried disabling all plugins and that didn't fix the issue. Also, the XML-RPC test on all 3 blogs resolves to "XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.", which I think is the expected behavior?

    Any other ideas?

  8. I'm having the same problem. I've tried fixing it, everything on my dashboard seems fine and changing the plugins doesn't change anything. This is a new blog and I've never used the app before.

    Anyone got any ideas?

  9. Same problem. Nothing changed and suddenly I'm not able to connect from my iPhone/iPad or add the Wordpress site to another iPhone.

Disabled all the plugins and Twenty Fourteen is already as default tempate installed. Problem not solved.

Wordpress/Anyone an idea of whats going wrong or better has a a solution!

If you are using the latest version of the app (currently 4.1.3), and you have tried disabling plugins and using a default theme and the problem persists, you're best bet is to contact your web host for assistance.

  11. so i need to tell my webhost: i am trying to log into my blog using a wordpress for ios app and i keep getting this message "sorry, we can't log you in" and the wordpress ios people told me to ask you for assistance

    has this worked for anyone?

  12. UPDATE. i kept trying to log in yesterday, today - hitting the addasite button hundreds of times until i am able to get with my webhost.

    it JUST connected.

the "large" pic format works for my purposes as well. i dunno what happened but hey, #GIFTHORSE

thank you for your time and patience, Eric. feels good to be back art blogging.

  13. Still not working. Even after installing a new Wordpress installation with a new database I'm not able to connect to it when using the ios app.
Did send an email to my hoster explaining the problem and the 'advise' of Wordpress to get in contact with them. Not that I aspect a solution of them but you never know.
@dakay any ideas how you got it working again?

  14. UPDATE:
Have been struggling with the plugins by deactivating and activating them again. When activating JetPack and turning on the Single Sign On feature I tried again, don't ask my why i tried it. This time I also ended the url with an extra '/'. An option I had tried before with no luck.

Believe it or not but after skipping this ‘Single Sign On’ part on my iPhone I'm able to logon again. But before I got to enthusiastic I also tested it on Android and I’m still not able to logon to the same Wordpress website using my Android device.

My conclusion so far, problem seems to be on the Wordpress side because my provider hasn’t change anything and it seems to be working again on iOs devices.
Question is why it suddenly stopt working and why it’s not working on an Android device.

Hopefully the Wordpress support people can help us soling that problem.

  15. @dakay

so i need to tell my webhost: i am trying to log into my blog using a wordpress for ios app and i keep getting this message "sorry, we can't log you in" and the wordpress ios people told me to ask you for assistance

Fair enough. I probably could have offered suggestions on what to ask when contacting your host.

If you have a self-hosted WordPress site you're having trouble connecting to, and you have already tried disabling plugins and using a default theme, you can try contacting your web host for assistance. When you describe the problem, you can say that you're having trouble connecting the app to your site and need to make sure the following is true:
    - that the server does not return an error when trying to access your sites xmlrpc.php file.
    - that XML-RPC is not being blocked by the host.
    - that the server is properly configured so that your site's xmlrpc.php file is accessible, and not blocked by settings in .htaccess, mod_security, etc.
    - that the response to a valid XML-RPC requests is being returned as valid XML.

Its not a comprehensive list, but its probably a good starting point when asking your web host for help.

Thanks for the update. It does sound like there might be something going on with single sign on.
