App 4.6.1 crashed, nothing appears on screen

  1. I am on 4.6.1 and have been using it just fine when it crashed last night--and I have no idea what caused it (I don't remember what I was doing). Upon attempting to reopen it, I get a blank screen. All I can see is the blue banner at the top (with my iphone info at the very top). I have rebooted the app and rebooted the phone--to no avail. I know my next step is uninstalling and reinstalling the app, but are there logs I can find/send to see what happened to see if this is a possible bug in the new version?

    This sounds like a bug that we've patched but we wouldn't mind taking a look at the crash log to see if its the same one we're thinking of. iTunes will sync logs from your phone, but they are a little tricky to get at. I found this article that has a good explanation of the steps.

    If you find the crash log (or logs if there are more than one) please send them to "mobile at automattic dot com" and we'll take a look.

  4. Will the logs still be there since I uninstalled and reinstalled? I wouldn't imagine so but you never know.

  5. I'm not sure, but I think system level logs (the kind in question) are not deleted when removing an app. If they aren't showing up after syncing to iTunes then they were probably removed as well.

  7. DoH! My bad! I should have clarified. That article was written specifically for the Pocket app, I just really liked their step by step guide. The logs for the WordPress app would naturally be named WordPress, and the email address to send any logs to would be "mobile at automattic dot com".

  8. Lol I should have known better, too. But there weren't any WordPress listings, either--because that would have jumped out at me.

  9. It happened again. I was posting and things were working fine when it crashed. It opened again and asked if I wanted to send a crash report. I said yes and then the screen went blank again. Closed the app (swiped to close), rebooted phone, and it still opens to a blank page. I'm guessing I'll need to delete the app and reinstall again.

    I'll be syncing with iTunes shortly to see if a log appears (before I delete the app this time).

  11. I hope you find the problem and a solution because it just happened again. This time I had just tried to save my update and I got a message that media was still trying to upload and did I want to post anyway. I said yes because I was just saving and knew the media error was due to a previously failed upload attempt. Then as it was saving it crashed. It asked if I wanted to send a report and this time I said Send Always...and then I got the blank screen of death.

    I synced my phone again and there was no new Crash Report...?!

    In the past I've seen crash reports not be created depending on the kind of crash and when it happened. Sometimes the process that creates the crash report doesn't get triggered. Its disappointing when it happens but not surprising.

    Thanks again for the reports!!! Version 4.7 is just waiting on Apple's approval. Hopefully the wait won't be too long.
